I’m John H. Oatis III, a full stack developer with experience building and maintaining web applications across the entire stack—from user interfaces to servers and databases. I’ve worked in large organizations, but I’ve found that I do my best work in small to mid-sized teams where engineers have real ownership, collaborate closely, and can see their work make a direct impact.
I take a pragmatic approach to technology. I enjoy learning new frameworks and tools, but I’m not driven by trends for their own sake. I focus on choosing technologies that solve real problems and stand the test of time. On the front end, I’ve worked with React, Vue, Angular, and jQuery, with an emphasis on maintainable, accessible interfaces. On the back end and infrastructure side, I’ve configured Apache servers, managed deployments, and migrated services to cloud environments.
My database experience is grounded in SQL. Most of my career has been spent working with MySQL, and for the past six years I’ve been using PostgreSQL extensively. I care deeply about data integrity, performance, and building systems that are easy to reason about and maintain.
I enjoy roles where I can think holistically about systems, communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, and continuously improve how things are built. I value clarity, reliability, and thoughtful problem-solving over unnecessary complexity.
Outside of work, I’m a family man and an active community volunteer. I enjoy reading fantasy and science fiction, playing games like Fallout 4 and Guild Wars 2, and spending time with friends over good conversation and laughter.
